Fragments of Theory and Craft
During my more productive writing periods, I will often keep a notebook and write short theory and craft essays in between more serious contributions to various projects. Those scratch essays are often how I work out ideas, test out language to explain things, and are generally the precursors to other works. While working on my theory book Toybox, I revisited one of these notebooks. Toybox in particular has been a very draining book to write, and in an attempt to give myself some more energy to keep writing I’ve decided to release a scan of this notebook.
This notebook was written from around August to October/November 2024, and covers topics I was ruminating on at the time. Three warnings about reading this:
First, this notebook is not transcribed—you will have to decipher my “illegible” handwriting.
Second, this notebook is not formally written. These essays are entirely unedited and do not cite sources. They are drafts, handwritten in real time. They were written for me and I can’t guarantee how understandable they are.
Third, these essays are not finished. The ideas I discuss I intended to elaborate and more fully develop in later essays. Some material I undoubtedly would have cut, and some ideas are only briefly mentioned without proper development of their implications/supporting arguments.
All of that said, I hope y’all like some of this material. It’s fragments of what I’ve been working on for a long time and just can’t seem to finish.
